A Wedding Invite!

This was one of my projects from the last couple months that I can finally post...

A little history lesson in the form of a wedding invite... starring my terrible drawing skills.

From the description on Youtube (too lazy to write it again) :

We wanted to do something a little different for our wedding invites (though video invites are becoming the new traditional invite), and decided to tell the story of how the two of us met and married, all while paying homage to "How I Met Your Mother" - a show that played a small role.

I claim no ability to draw, my skill ended at the animtion school level.

I Don't "Tweet" Much...

... But when I do, Kevin Smith "Favorites" it.

That's right... My good pal Kev Smith gave his thumbs up (I've had a pretty boring week...)

I only posted that twitter post because I watched the following vid on the Smodco Channel and it kinda made me sad for the days of Kev and Ben...

C'mon, lets do that "Ben as the Shark" JAWS remake!

Let's write a screenplay!

Yup, I have officially rallied my friends to take part in the best lottery ever - Writing and selling a screenplay!!!

yup... write out everything by hand first... old school.

The idea for the feature we're writing came to me in a dream... it was just enough of a fucked up premise I figured it would work as a kids CG animated flick.

I pitched it to some friends who were all REALLY excited about it, and then roped a couple of them in to help flesh it out.

So last night I headed to the best writing room in Vancouver - Boston Pizza - with Kevin Pavlovic and Jenn Taylor. My WIFE, Arlyn (still weird to say) will be helping as well, but couldn't make it out for this first meeting.

I'm probably going to document the creation of this script here, for shits and giggles... but not sure how much exactly...

So it has begun...

Film School Fridays with Kevin Smith...

I'll probably always be a big fan of Kevin Smith... There have definitely been times I've grown tired of him, but it's usually only for a short bit before I'm right back to listening to everything he has to say.

Anyway... he has a newish podcast out that's pretty damn cool and inspiring, even for someone like me who is now 16 years out of film school...

16 years? whatthefuck?

Anyways, Check this out if you're bored... it's a good listen...

The PEAK 102.7 Commercial contest....

So the idea behind this contest is that the Peak has moved station numbers from 100.5 to 102.7 FM and they want a commercial letting everyone know.

The reason for the move is because of their shitty signal. They're growing as a station, and now would like to be heard when you drive 5 minutes out of the downtown core.

We shot and edited this whole thing last night in 6 hours... Overall, I'm happy with it...

Thanks to Deb Copeland and family who let us use their house, and who's voice over ended up on the cutting room floor - not because she sucked, but because the whole thing worked better with nothing being said at all.

Deadline is today at 5:00... no idea when a winner is announced. Even runner up would be awesome... gotta pay off that wedding.

New Commercial contest!

Time to finally get back to working on stuff...

The day I got married I heard about another Peak Commercial contest I thought it would be due a few weeks from then, but it was only 6 days... so with only 1 day now til the deadline, we start shooting it tonight.

I thought I would have a couple of weeks to figure something out, but no. This idea needed to be something we could shoot quickly and with no special editing needed.

I'll probably post the finished commercial here tomorrow... cuz it has to be done and uploaded to Youtube tonight.

No pressure...

I'm 36!

I know I say this every year... but THIS year let's make it count!

As I write this I'm listening to Bruce Timm talking about developing Batman for the WB... What am I doing with myself!?!

Well I'm gearing up like crazy for a bunch of personal projects... Just been a bit distracted with the wedding...

Regular updates to begin...

I couldn't love this more...

This has been making the internet rounds, so it's likely you've seen it SOMEWHERE else before here, but I'm going to post it anyway simply because I love it. A guy has a conversation with his 12 year old self...

I must have watched this at LEAST... 4 times now... Which doesn't sound like much, but it's actually a chore for me to get through most Youtube vids... so there you go.

There was a recent episode of "The New Girl" where two of the characters played a video for one other character that he had recorded several years earlier, warning him about getting back together with an ex girlfriend (does that make sense? Try to keep up...)

Anyway, it was a brilliant idea, and one I wanted to rip off on "Kneel Before Pod"... have Kev, John and I talk to ourselves in the future... Something we could look back on years later.

Then this vid comes out with a guy who did it already, starting 20 years ago.

Do we bother?

If there's still a youtube 20 years from now, It's ALL going to be people talking to themselves from the past.

Ah well... Bravo to this guy.

As they say... "Today, you win the internets"

"Sorkinisms"

I'm not the biggest Aaron Sorkin follower. I've never watched the West Wing, and don't know half the shows that are seen in this clip. That said, I'm a huge fan of "The Social Network" and think it's one of the best written films I've seen in years.

Today I watched this vid (embedded below) that shows how much of Sorkin's dialogue is regurgitated from project to project. In know way do I show this to say "Ha... that's shitty", but instead post it to say "Ha... if Sorkin can regurgitate dialogue in his scripts, then surely a lowly wannabe like me can get away with it as well!"

What show is that with Nate from Six Feet Under?! That guys awesome.

Storytellers: Neil Gaiman

Keeping with my current trend of posting vids of people who do what I want to do, talking about doing what I want to do, here is a really cool Neil Gaiman address to the University of the Arts...

I wanted to have this blog be more about projects "House of Ten" or myself are working on, but the only project being worked on right now is mine and Arlyn's wedding... Until that is all wrapped up, there won't be a lot else going on. However, the wedding itself has a few projects I will be sharing soon... I couldn't do a wedding without some sort of video project taking place.

Again, If you're bored, you can check out wedding stuff that I have already leaked here:

Storytellers: Lindelof On LOST...

I loved LOST... Still do. I LOVED the ending. A lot of people don't.

I do wonder though, of those who HATE the ending, how many people just flat-out don't get what happened.

I was reading a LOST message board a few weeks ago, and one guy got all pissy saying he should have been a writer on the show, and that he's written TONS of fan fiction episodes that are far better than the episodes we were given. He finished his post by stating that he had actually written a great final episode that didn't have all that "They were dead the whole time" shit.

Fer fux sake.

So although I hate posting on message boards, I basically had to crap on this guy and say that if he thought everyone was dead the whole time, he had no business writing ANYTHING about LOST.

I figured this kind of idiocy must be rare, and then I saw the following interview...

This guy is actually interviewing Damon Lindelof and tries to give him shit about his crap ending to LOST.

However, the interviewer doesn't understand the ending AT ALL, and Damon has to explain it to him like he's a child.

Any way, aside from the idiot interviewer, this is a great watch... I like this Damon Lindelof guy. He should have taken a crack at The Dark Tower when he had the chance.

The Garage...

An article about a show I was involved in a while back has surfaced....

http://www.canadiananimationresources.ca/?p=6126

"Garage" - TV series from Sam Chou on Vimeo.

The show is in limbo right now. I actually had a lot of fun writing short episodes for it, but I guess it needed less "The Wonder Years" and more "Farting".

You know... one of these days... I'm gonna work on something that actually gets distribution, heh.

A good watch for storytellers out there....

You like writing stories and such?

Any one looking for a great watch on the secrets of "good story" should check this out. I agree 100% with this guy (cuz my approval means so much).

I'm lucky enough to get to spend most of my time these days writing... I'm going to start planning my TED talk now. It will be called "Making it in writing with a rudimentary knowledge of grammar".

2012

yeah, it's Scott Pilgrim for no reason...other than it makes the page look better.
